Riverway Golf Course hosts Kwalten Polytechnic University Turf Students

Last updated: February 17, 2023

Kwantlen Polytechnic University's professor of Horticulture and Turf management brought 10 students to Riverway Golf Course for an educational field trip. This hands-on seminar focussed on pests and pest management as part of the program's “Professional Pest Management-module 1”. The students learned about common pests that most golf courses in the Pacific Northwest must deal with. The field trip included a 1 and ½ hours lecture session followed by a question/answer time.

This session was followed by an on course “walk thru” on hole 18.

This is the 5th year in a row (excluding 2020) that students learned from Superintendent Peter Sorokovsky and Golf Course Foreman Ken Lyons on how to manage pests on golf course turf.

Enthusiastic Turf Student Theodore Fong was grateful for the session and said prior to leaving -  “thank you for allowing myself and the rest of my class to come to Riverway Golf Course to learn more about pest management. It was such an informative and interesting session! Being able to get out of the class room to go on field trips and meet turf pros like you has definitely been one of the highlights of this year.”  It is always the desire of Golf Burnaby to ensure that the next generation of potential turf managers understand the ins and outs of golf course maintenance and pest management as it relates to environmental sustainability and the natural habitat of a vibrant golf course.
